Unless we provide homes for all people, that they can afford and in the right location, how can we expect our local communities, and the people that live in them, to thrive? Traditional designs, funding models, construction systems, development processes, and housing support models are failing many at a time when we are seeing a growing number of people in housing need.
Given the limited resources available to people in housing need, and the organisations that seek to help them, we have to push for alternative approaches that result in more genuinely affordable, intelligent housing. I took a leap to work alongside like-minded people and organisations to help them find creative ways to source additional housing; and to seriously consider how we can use existing accommodation and resources in a better way to improve the whole experience for residents and tenants.
Having previously been the Housing & Development lead for a large London YMCA, I have experience rooted in meeting the needs of vulnerable people requiring temporary housing, but I also had the opportunity to create the award-winning Y:Cube Housing – an affordable, deployable, volumetric housing initiative delivered in partnership with Roger Stirk Harbour + Partners and Aecom . See http://www.ymcalsw.org/ycube
In 2017, I have secured £9m grant for two housing providers in London to deliver 150 homes over four sites. I managed to secure the highest rate per unit in London. This will result in truly affordable well designed homes utilising modern methods of construction.
Working for YMCA England’s Housing department, I oversaw several new YMCA developments across London and the South East.
I am a non-executive Director of North London YMCA.
